How to Measure AI Visibility With a Prompt Panel and 6 Metrics

Track a fixed set of buyer prompts across the main AI tools and count how often your brand is named, cited and described correctly. Then check those counts against Google and Bing’s own AI reports.

How do you measure brand visibility in AI answers? The short answer

To measure AI visibility, build a fixed panel of real buyer prompts, run it on each AI platform on a set schedule, and record six things: mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, accuracy, sentiment and stability. Then compare against Search Console’s and Bing’s first-party AI reports.

Key takeaways

  • Fix the prompt list before the first test. Changing it later breaks every comparison.
  • Run each prompt more than once. AI answers vary between runs.
  • Google’s Search Console now shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode for all sites.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools shows citations across Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries.
  • Google warns that no third-party tool can see its internal ranking or AI systems.

Which AI platforms should you track for visibility, and why?

Track AI visibility on the platforms your buyers actually use, which for most businesses means Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Start with three or four, measured well, before you add more. Breadth without consistency produces noise.

Each platform earns its place for a different reason:

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. They sit on top of the search results your buyers already use. Google also gives you first-party impression data for them.
  • ChatGPT. A common starting point for research. OpenAI says it searches the web when a question needs current information.
  • Microsoft Copilot. Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations from it, which makes it easy to verify.
  • Perplexity. It shows sources prominently, so citations are easy to record by hand.
  • Gemini. Worth tracking for Android-heavy and Google Workspace audiences.

For B2B companies, add Claude if your buyers are technical teams. For local businesses, Google’s surfaces usually matter most, because Business Profile data feeds them.

Digital Magma usually starts a new client on four platforms and adds others once the visibility baseline is stable. Measuring four platforms carefully beats skimming eight.

Write down why each platform is on the list. When budget gets tight, that note tells you which one to drop first.

How do you build an AI visibility prompt panel from buyer questions?

An AI visibility prompt panel is a fixed list of questions your buyers really ask, grouped by intent. Digital Magma builds it from sales calls, Search Console queries and site search, and keeps it unchanged for at least a quarter so results stay comparable.

A useful panel for a small or mid-sized business has 20 to 50 prompts. Fewer than 20 gives results that swing wildly. More than 50 is hard to run by hand.

Split the prompts into four groups:

  1. Category prompts. “Best orthodontist in Pune for adults.” No brand named.
  2. Problem prompts. “Why do my aligners hurt after a week?” Informational questions where your content could be cited.
  3. Comparison prompts. “Clear aligners vs braces cost in India.” Where shortlists form.
  4. Brand prompts. “Is [your brand] good for adults?” To check accuracy and sentiment.
One row per prompt, one column per platform and run.

Write prompts the way people type them, including Hindi or Hinglish where your buyers use it. “Noida mein best CA firm” is a real prompt pattern.

Record the exact wording, the date, the platform, the login state and the location for each run. Without those fields, nobody can repeat your test.

Six AI visibility metrics: mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, accuracy, sentiment and stability

Six metrics give a full picture of AI visibility. Mention rate and citation rate show presence, share of voice shows position against competitors, accuracy and sentiment show quality, and stability shows how much to trust the rest. Digital Magma reports all six, because any one alone can mislead.

Six metrics for AI visibility, with an illustrative example
MetricWhat it countsIllustrative example
Mention rateRuns where your brand is named12 of 40 runs
Citation rateRuns where your URL is a source5 of 40 runs
Share of voiceYour mentions against all tracked brands’ mentions12 of 60 mentions
AccuracyMentions with correct facts (services, place, prices)10 of 12 mentions
SentimentMentions that are positive, neutral or negative9 positive, 3 neutral
StabilityPrompts where reruns agree on whether you appear14 of 20 prompts

The example column is made up to show the arithmetic. It is not client data.

Count runs, not prompts. If each of 20 prompts runs twice on one platform, that is 40 runs, and the denominators above use 40.

Accuracy deserves more attention than it gets. Being named with the wrong city or an old price can cost you more than not being named.

Stability tells you how far to trust a change. If only half your prompts give the same result on a rerun, a small monthly gain may be chance.

Our AI share of voice entry explains that metric in detail, and the AI citation entry defines what counts as a citation.

First-party AI visibility data: Search Console, Bing AI Performance and GA4

First-party AI visibility data comes from the platforms themselves, so it is the most reliable number you can get. Google Search Console reports impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations in Copilot and Bing, and GA4 shows visits that AI tools send.

Google Search Console: Generative AI performance report

Google’s Search Console help page on the Generative AI performance report says it shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google rolled it out to all sites worldwide on 31 August 2026.

You can group the data by page, country, date and device. If two of your links appear in one AI feature, the chart counts that as one impression.

If the report is missing, Google says your site may not have enough AI impressions yet, or may be excluded from Search generative AI features in settings.

Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance

Microsoft’s Bing Webmaster blog introduced AI Performance on 10 February 2026. It covers Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and some partner integrations.

The dashboard shows Total Citations, Average Cited Pages, grounding queries and citations per page. Grounding queries are the phrases the AI used when it retrieved your content.

GA4: AI referral visits

In GA4, open the traffic acquisition report and filter the session source for AI domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Save it as an exploration so it runs each month.

Clicks from AI Overviews are counted inside normal Google organic traffic, so they will not show as a separate source.

Manual AI visibility tracking vs AI visibility tools

Manual AI visibility tracking costs time but shows exactly what a buyer sees. Paid AI visibility tools run many more prompts automatically but estimate results through their own methods. For client visibility reports, Digital Magma uses a manual panel as the reference and treats tool data as a second opinion.

Before you pay for a tool, ask the vendor four things. How are prompts run? From which locations? Logged in or not? How often is each prompt repeated?

Google’s guide on optimizing for generative AI features adds a caution. It says no third-party tool has access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems, so be wary of tools that claim “internal” metrics.

AI visibility measurement mistakes that produce false results

Most false AI visibility results come from testing in a way no buyer would: logged in with personal memory, from the office location, with one run per prompt. Digital Magma has seen each of these mistakes turn a flat month into an apparent win or loss.

  • Personal memory left on. OpenAI says ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a search query. Use a temporary chat for tests.
  • One location only. ChatGPT may use approximate IP location. A Delhi test will not show what a Mumbai buyer sees.
  • Single runs. Answers vary. Run every prompt at least twice.
  • Changing the panel. Adding easy prompts mid-quarter inflates the score.
  • Counting brand prompts. Prompts that name you will nearly always mention you. Report them apart.
  • Ignoring accuracy. A mention with wrong facts is counted as a win when it is a problem.

One more trap is screenshots shared by sales teams. A rep who sees the brand once in ChatGPT reports a win, and nobody records the twenty prompts where it was missing. Digital Magma only counts AI visibility that appears in the logged panel.

Keep a short method note with every report. It should state the dates, platforms, session type, locations and run count.

What Digital Magma has seen when measuring AI visibility for clients

Digital Magma has found that clients trust AI visibility numbers only when they can rerun the test themselves. That is why our reports pair a fixed prompt panel with first-party data, and always show the method beside the result.

A Canadian welding manufacturer shows how the layers fit. Over a three-year engagement it has kept 40+ keywords in Google’s top 10, and its brand is visible in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.

The prompt panel shows where the brand appears. Search Console shows the search side: in one three-month window the site earned about 30K clicks from about 100K impressions.

Reading both together keeps the story honest. AI mentions that rise while search impressions fall would be a signal to check the method first.

Clients notice the reporting style. Akshay Meghanathi wrote in his Google review: “Reporting is transparent and performance has improved consistently over time.”

Nitesh Gavadiya put the same point another way: “They provide regular updates and explain performance in simple terms.”

What to do next: a 30-day AI visibility measurement setup

A 30-day AI visibility setup gives you a baseline you can defend to a CEO. Digital Magma runs it in four weeks: connect first-party data, write the prompt panel, run the baseline, then publish the first report with its method attached.

  1. Week 1: first-party data. Verify the site in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Open both AI reports. Build the GA4 AI referral exploration.
  2. Week 2: prompt panel. Collect 20 to 50 buyer prompts in four groups. Pick three to five competitor brands to track.
  3. Week 3: baseline. Run every prompt twice per platform from temporary sessions. Save screenshots and answers with dates.
  4. Week 4: first report. Calculate the six metrics. Add Search Console AI impressions, Bing citations and GA4 AI visits. Note the method.

Digital Magma also writes a one-page note on what the baseline means before any work starts: where visibility is strong, where it is absent, and which competitors take your place. That note is the yardstick for every later report.

After that, run the panel monthly. Quarterly is too slow to catch accuracy problems, and weekly is mostly noise for a small panel.

Digital Magma’s AI SEO services include this AI visibility setup and the monthly report.

Measuring AI visibility: frequently asked questions

These AI visibility questions come from marketing managers who must report a number upward and want it to hold up. Digital Magma’s answers on measuring visibility point to first-party data wherever the platforms publish it.

How can I check my AI visibility for free?

Use Search Console’s Generative AI performance report, Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance dashboard and GA4 referral data. Add a manual prompt panel in a spreadsheet. All four are free.

What is an AI visibility score?

It is a single number some tools calculate from mentions, citations and position across prompts. Each vendor uses its own formula, so scores from two tools are not comparable.

Which AI visibility tools are worth paying for?

Choose a tool that explains how it runs prompts, from where, and how often. Compare its results with your manual panel for a month before you commit to an annual plan.

How many prompts should I test?

Most small and mid-sized businesses do well with 20 to 50 prompts, each run at least twice per platform. Larger brands with many product lines may need more.

How do I track ChatGPT traffic in GA4?

Open the traffic acquisition report and filter the session source for chatgpt.com. Save the filter as an exploration, and add other AI domains to the same view.

Does Search Console show AI Overview data?

Search Console’s Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says it reached all sites worldwide on 31 August 2026.

How often should AI visibility be measured?

Monthly suits most businesses. Run the full panel on the same days each month, with the same session type and locations, so results compare fairly.

Should branded prompts count in the score?

Report them separately. Prompts that name your brand almost always mention it, so they inflate mention rate. Use them to check accuracy and sentiment instead.
