What is ChatGPT SEO?
ChatGPT SEO is the work of making a business easy for ChatGPT to find, trust and cite when people ask it questions. It covers crawler access for OAI-SearchBot, visibility in the search indexes ChatGPT draws on, clear entity facts, answer-first pages and mentions on trusted sites. Digital Magma runs this work as part of its AI SEO service from Noida.
How it works
ChatGPT search: how it finds, picks and cites sources
ChatGPT answers in two ways. Sometimes it replies from what the model learned in training. When a question needs current or specific facts, it runs a web search and cites the pages it used. OpenAI publishes only part of how this works, so the notes below stick to what OpenAI has documented and what anyone can observe.
Two paths to an answer
Model memory reflects how often and how consistently your brand appeared on the public web before training. Live search reflects what the search index holds today. ChatGPT SEO has to work on both, because a buyer never knows which path produced the answer.
Bing and other search providers
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside its own crawling, and Microsoft Bing is widely understood to be one of them. How the sources are weighted is not public. A page Bing has never indexed starts at a disadvantage, so Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow matter here.
OAI-SearchBot
OpenAI’s own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, collects pages for ChatGPT’s search results. OpenAI’s documentation tells site owners to allow it in robots.txt if they want to appear in ChatGPT search answers, and notes that changes can take about 24 hours to apply.
GPTBot and ChatGPT-User are different
GPTBot gathers content for model training. Blocking it tells OpenAI not to train on your pages, and it does not remove you from search. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a person asks ChatGPT to open it. Many sites block the wrong bot by accident.
Recency
Questions about prices, “best” lists, launches and anything dated tend to trigger a live search. Pages with a visible updated date, current figures and no stale year in the title are easier to use as a source for those questions.
Entity clarity
ChatGPT has to be sure who you are before it names you. The same business name, location, founder, services and category on your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, directories and review sites make that easy. Conflicting details make it hesitate.
Passages it can lift
Cited text is usually a short, self-contained passage that answers one question. A heading phrased as the question, then a direct answer in the first two sentences, gives ChatGPT something clean to quote.
Proof from other sites
Answers that recommend a vendor tend to lean on reviews, comparison articles, Reddit threads, news coverage and industry lists. Your own site is one voice. Independent mentions are what make ChatGPT confident enough to name you.
Pages it can read
Crawlers read HTML. Content that appears only after heavy JavaScript runs, sits behind a login or loads inside a widget may never reach the index. Server-side rendering or static HTML removes that risk.
Sources: OpenAI’s published crawler documentation (OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User) and OpenAI’s statements on ChatGPT search. Anything beyond that is our reading of observable behaviour, and we label it that way in client reports.

Not sure where ChatGPT stands on your brand?
We will run your top buyer questions through ChatGPT and show you the answers, free.
Why now
ChatGPT SEO in 2026: why it matters now
ChatGPT matters to marketers in 2026 because a growing share of research now starts in a chat window. The buyer who asks ChatGPT for a shortlist may never see a page of blue links.
Shortlists happen in chat
People ask ChatGPT to compare agencies, software, clinics and courses. If you are missing from that first answer, you are missing from the shortlist.
Fewer clicks, better clicks
When ChatGPT cites you, the visitor arrives already half convinced. Traffic volume is smaller than Google’s. Intent is often higher.
Wrong answers spread
If ChatGPT has old prices, a closed branch or the wrong service list, it repeats that to every buyer. Fixing the facts at the source is part of the job.
Bing matters again
For years many Indian businesses ignored Bing. Its index now feeds AI answers, so a clean Bing presence is worth the effort.
AI engines share signals
Work that helps ChatGPT usually helps Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Overviews too. The same clear entity and cited passages travel across all of them.
Why Digital Magma
ChatGPT SEO agency in India: why choose Digital Magma?
A good agency for ChatGPT visibility can prove its SEO foundations, is honest about what it cannot control and shows you the raw answers. That is how Digital Magma works.
SEO results you can check
500+ keywords on Google page one and 100+ at #1. AI engines draw on the same web that those rankings came from.
GEO and AEO as a specialism
Founder Ankit Sachan has worked on generative and answer engine optimisation since these tools began citing sources, alongside classic technical SEO.
Raw answers over scores
You see the actual ChatGPT responses we logged, with dates. No black-box “AI score” that nobody can verify.
Rated 5.0 on Google
82+ reviews from clients on our Google Business Profile. Read them on Google.
No guarantees we cannot keep
Nobody can promise a ChatGPT citation. We promise the work, the tracking and a straight report on what moved.
Six countries of experience
Campaigns in India, the USA, the UK, the UAE, Canada and Australia, so we know how ChatGPT answers differ by market.
Experience
ChatGPT SEO experience: what Digital Magma brings
Digital Magma brings ten years of search work to ChatGPT visibility, and that matters more than any new tool. The pages that ChatGPT cites are, in most categories, pages that were already well built, well linked and clearly written.
Our founder has led SEO across six countries, rebuilt a healthcare startup’s site for search and taken a Noida software firm to #1. Each one needed what ChatGPT rewards: readable HTML, precise answers, consistent facts and outside mentions.
- Technical: React to Next.js migration so every page shipped as readable HTML
- Content: future-keyword posts published before competitors noticed the topic
- Authority: content syndication, link building and Google News visibility for publishers
- Entity: a company LinkedIn page grown from 4K to 28K followers
- International: hreflang and country pages for six markets
Process
ChatGPT SEO process at Digital Magma: 6 steps
Digital Magma runs the programme in six steps. The first two weeks are about measurement, so every later change can be compared against a baseline.
Question set
We build the list of questions your buyers ask, from sales calls, Search Console, People Also Ask and Reddit.
Baseline
Each question goes through ChatGPT. We log who is named, who is cited and what is said about you.
Access fixes
robots.txt, firewall rules, Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow and rendering, fixed in the first month.
Entity work
Schema, profiles and a facts page so every source tells the same story about your business.
Content and mentions
Answer-first pages, comparison content, reviews and PR aimed at the sources ChatGPT already trusts.
Re-test and report
The same questions re-run monthly, with changes in mentions, citations and leads reported.
Every month
ChatGPT SEO deliverables you get every month
Digital Magma logs every task in a shared sheet, so you can see what was done and why. A typical month includes:
- Prompt report: your question set re-run, with mentions and citations compared to last month
- Pages: two to four new or rewritten answer-first pages
- Entity: schema updates and profile fixes where facts drifted
- Mentions: PR pitches, review requests and listicle outreach, with outcomes
- Technical: crawl log check for OAI-SearchBot and Bingbot, plus any fixes
- Review call: 30 minutes on results and next month’s plan
Case studies
ChatGPT SEO foundations: three Digital Magma case studies
Digital Magma keeps client names private here. These three projects built the things ChatGPT depends on: readable pages, clear answers and authority across the web. The numbers are search results, which we report as they are.
A UK tele-oncology startup
Site built from scratch for search
- Challenge
- A React site that crawlers struggled to read, in a medical field where trust decides everything.
- Work
- Migration from React to Next.js so pages render as HTML, clear service pages and answer-led content.
- Result
- 30+ keywords ranked in the first month and 8 at #1, on a site any AI crawler can read.
An Indian mobile-app development company
International SEO plus brand authority
- Challenge
- Low visibility in a crowded global category where buyers compare many vendors.
- Work
- International SEO for six countries, steady content and a LinkedIn company page programme.
- Result
- 500+ page-one keywords, 100+ at #1, and LinkedIn followers up from 4K to 28K.
A Noida software development company
Future-keyword content
- Challenge
- Win a competitive “top companies” search against older, bigger firms.
- Work
- Nine posts on searches that were only starting to grow, written answer-first.
- Result
- #1 on Google for “top software development companies in noida” within two months.
These are SEO outcomes. We do not publish ChatGPT citation counts as case results, because answers vary by user, session and date. Search Console screenshots are available on request.
Measurement
ChatGPT SEO measurement: how Digital Magma tracks AI visibility
ChatGPT gives no Search Console of its own, so Digital Magma measures visibility from five angles and reports all five together.
Prompt tracking
A fixed set of buyer questions, run on a schedule. We record whether you are mentioned, whether you are cited with a link, and your position in any list.
Share of voice
Your mentions against your top competitors across the same questions. This is the number that shows whether the work is moving you up the shortlist.
Answer accuracy
Is what ChatGPT says about you correct? Wrong prices, services or locations are logged and traced back to the page causing them.
Referral visits and leads
Links cited in ChatGPT usually carry utm_source=chatgpt.com. We set up GA4 so those visits, and the enquiries they create, show up on their own line.
Crawler activity
Server logs show how often OAI-SearchBot and Bingbot fetch your pages, and which ones they skip.
Compare
ChatGPT SEO vs traditional SEO: what is different
ChatGPT visibility and traditional SEO share the same base. The difference is in the goal and how you measure it, as the table shows.
| Factor | ChatGPT SEO | Traditional SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Be named and cited in the answer | Rank a page in the results list |
| Main index | Third-party providers such as Bing, plus OAI-SearchBot | Google’s own index |
| Unit that wins | A short passage or a brand mention | A whole page |
| Off-site signal | Mentions, reviews and lists, linked or not | Mostly backlinks |
| Measurement | Prompt tracking, share of voice, referrals | Rankings, clicks, Search Console |
| Stability | Answers vary by session | Rankings fairly stable day to day |
| Shared foundations | Crawlable HTML, fast pages, clear structure, E-E-A-T and accurate facts help both | |

Buyer’s guide
ChatGPT SEO agency: how to choose the right one
A trustworthy agency for ChatGPT work shows raw answers, explains its method and refuses to guarantee citations. Use this checklist on anyone you talk to, Digital Magma included.
Green flags: look for these
- Dated logs of real ChatGPT answers
- A clear view of OAI-SearchBot versus GPTBot
- Bing Webmaster Tools in the plan
- Proven classic SEO results
- Mentions earned on real, relevant sites
- Reports that connect AI visibility to leads
Red flags: walk away from these
- “Guaranteed ChatGPT ranking”
- A secret “AI score” with no raw data
- Fake reviews or paid spam on Reddit
- Hidden text or prompt injection on your pages
- Mass AI-written pages with no editing
- Claims of a special deal with OpenAI
Questions to ask any ChatGPT SEO provider
- Which questions will you track, and how did you choose them?
- How many times do you run each question before reporting?
- What will you change on my site in the first 30 days?
- Which third-party sites do you plan to get us mentioned on?
- How will I see ChatGPT visits and leads in my own analytics?
- What do you do if ChatGPT says something wrong about us?
What to expect

First citations
Answer-first pages start appearing as sources for specific, low-competition questions.
Mentions build
Reviews, PR and list inclusions push you into shortlist answers for broader questions.
Default answer
Your brand becomes a regular name in your category. We keep facts fresh and defend the position.
From the founder
ChatGPT SEO lessons from the founder
Digital Magma founder Ankit Sachan has done SEO since 2016 and AI search work since assistants started citing pages. Four lessons shape our plans.
Check robots.txt first
A surprising number of sites block every AI bot in one line, often added by a plugin or a CDN default. Nothing else matters until that is fixed.
Your site is one witness
ChatGPT rarely recommends a business on its own word. It wants other sites to agree. Budget for mentions as well as pages.
Specific beats clever
A plain sentence with a number, a place and a price is far easier to cite than a clever tagline. Write for quoting.
Test more than once
The same question can give a different answer an hour later. Decisions based on one screenshot are guesses.
Client reviews
ChatGPT SEO and search clients: what they say about Digital Magma
Digital Magma is rated 5.0 on Google from 82+ reviews. These three are quoted from our Google Business Profile.
“Their SEO audit was very detailed. We never expected there could be so many technical issues.”
“What stood out most was their communication and transparency. They provide regular updates and explain performance in simple terms.”
“They explain strategies clearly and focus on long-term business growth instead of short-term promises.”

FAQs
ChatGPT SEO: frequently asked questions
How does ChatGPT decide which websites to cite?
ChatGPT cites pages it found through web search when a question needs current or specific facts. OpenAI says it uses third-party search providers and its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Pages that are indexed, readable as HTML, clearly structured, current and backed by other sites are easier for it to use. The exact weighting is not public.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
OpenAI describes ChatGPT search as using third-party search providers plus its own crawling, and Bing is widely reported to be one of those providers. It does not use Google’s index directly. That is why Digital Magma includes Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow in every plan.
Should I block GPTBot?
That depends on whether you want OpenAI to train models on your content. Blocking GPTBot stops training use. It does not remove you from ChatGPT search, which relies on OAI-SearchBot. Many businesses allow OAI-SearchBot and decide on GPTBot separately. We set both to match your preference.
Can you guarantee my brand will appear in ChatGPT?
No honest agency can guarantee that, because OpenAI controls the answers and they vary by user and session. Digital Magma guarantees the work: access fixes, entity clean-up, answer-first pages, mentions and monthly tracking.
How long does ChatGPT SEO take to work?
Crawler and Bing fixes can change live search answers within days to weeks. Citations for specific questions usually follow in two to three months. Appearing in broad shortlist answers depends on reviews and mentions, which typically takes four to six months of steady work.
Is ChatGPT SEO different from regular SEO?
ChatGPT SEO builds on regular SEO but changes the goal. Instead of ranking a page, you want a passage quoted or your brand named. That shifts more effort into entity facts, third-party mentions, Bing visibility and answer-first writing. Sites with weak SEO foundations rarely do well in ChatGPT.
How do you measure ChatGPT visibility?
Digital Magma runs a fixed set of buyer questions through ChatGPT every month and records mentions, citations, list position and accuracy against competitors. We add GA4 referral data from chatgpt.com, OAI-SearchBot activity in server logs and branded search trends from Search Console and Bing.
Does schema markup help with ChatGPT?
Schema markup helps machines read who you are, what you sell and who wrote your content. OpenAI has not said it uses schema as a ranking factor. We treat Organization, Person, Service and FAQ schema as clarity work that supports entity recognition across every AI engine and Google.
What is llms.txt and do I need it?
llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file that lists your most important pages for language models. It is cheap to add and harmless, but no major AI company has confirmed it affects answers. Digital Magma adds one as a low-cost extra, never as the main strategy.
Do Reddit and reviews really affect ChatGPT answers?
ChatGPT often cites Reddit threads, review sites and comparison articles for recommendation questions. Real reviews and honest community answers help. Fake reviews and spam break platform rules and can backfire badly, so Digital Magma only runs real review requests and disclosed participation.
Will ChatGPT SEO help with Perplexity and Google AI Overviews?
Most of the work carries over. Clear entities, answer-first passages, crawlable pages and third-party mentions help Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and AI Overviews too. Google has its own index and reports, so we cover it on our AI Overviews optimization page.
Does a JavaScript website hurt ChatGPT visibility?
It can. AI crawlers read HTML, and content that only appears after heavy client-side JavaScript may be missed. Server-side rendering or static generation fixes this. We moved a UK healthcare startup from React to Next.js for exactly this reason, and 30+ keywords ranked in the first month.
How much does ChatGPT SEO cost?
ChatGPT SEO from Digital Magma is quoted on scope, because it depends on your markets, category and content needs. Our published SEO prices are an audit at ₹14,999 one-time, local SEO from ₹14,999 a month and local plus national SEO from ₹29,999 a month, all plus GST.
What is in the free ChatGPT visibility check?
We run your top buyer questions through ChatGPT, record who is named and cited, check your robots.txt for AI crawlers, look at Bing indexing and review your entity facts. You get the three fixes most likely to get you mentioned, within one working day.
