Generative engine optimization agency: what it is and what it delivers
A generative engine optimization agency improves how often and how accurately AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini cite your brand when they answer questions. The work covers source analysis, evidence-rich content, off-site mentions, crawler access and citation tracking. Digital Magma runs generative engine optimization on top of technical SEO, because these engines retrieve from search indexes.
The output
Citations and accurate mentions inside generated answers, counted as a share of a fixed set of buyer prompts run several times on each engine.
The inputs
Your own pages, what third-party pages say about you, whether AI crawlers can reach you, and how consistent your facts are everywhere.
What GEO is not
Some providers sell “GEO” when they mean using AI to write content. Here it means earning a place in the answers AI tools generate.
Where the term comes from
Generative engine optimization explained: where the term comes from
Generative engine optimization was named in a 2023 research paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, by Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari and four co-authors from IIT Delhi, Princeton University and independent research. It was accepted to KDD 2024, a major data-mining conference.
The authors describe a generative engine as a system that retrieves several documents for a query, then uses a large language model to write one answer grounded in them. Researchers call that pattern retrieval-augmented generation, and it is how the generative AI search products in the table below work.
Their worry was the website owner. A results page shows ten links in a visible order. A generated answer blends sources, quotes some and ignores others. In the paper’s words, creators have “little to no control” over when and how their content is shown.
The label has since reached industry tools. Microsoft called its February 2026 AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools an early step toward GEO tooling, so any generative engine optimization agency, Digital Magma included, now has first-party citation data to work with.
The study, read properly
Generative engine optimization research: what the 2023 study tested and found
The generative engine optimization research tested nine ways of rewriting a web source and measured how much of each AI answer drew on it. Evidence-based rewrites won, keyword stuffing lost, and the size of the gain depended on where the source already ranked.
Most agency pages quote one line from this study: GEO “can boost visibility by up to 40%”. The number is real, but it comes from a specific set-up. For each query the researchers took the top five Google results, rewrote one with a method, and asked GPT-3.5 Turbo to answer from all five, sampling five answers per query.
They scored visibility two ways. Position-adjusted word count counts the answer words attributed to a source, weighting early citations more. Subjective impression is a language-model judgement across seven sub-measures such as relevance and influence. The table shows overall scores on GEO-bench, from Table 1 of the paper.
| Method tested | What the rewrite does | Position-adjusted word count | Subjective impression |
|---|---|---|---|
| No change (baseline) | Source left as it was | 19.3 | 19.3 |
| Quotation Addition | Adds quotes from relevant, credible people or documents | 27.2 | 24.7 |
| Statistics Addition | Swaps vague claims for specific figures | 25.2 | 23.7 |
| Fluency Optimization | Makes the text read more smoothly | 24.7 | 21.9 |
| Cite Sources | Adds citations to credible sources | 24.6 | 21.9 |
| Technical Terms | Adds subject-specific terminology | 22.7 | 21.4 |
| Easy-to-Understand | Simplifies the language | 22.0 | 20.5 |
| Authoritative | Rewrites in a more confident, persuasive tone | 21.3 | 22.9 |
| Unique Words | Adds unusual vocabulary | 20.5 | 20.4 |
| Keyword Stuffing | Repeats query keywords | 17.7 | 20.2 |
Source: Aggarwal et al., “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, Table 1. Subjective impression scores are normalized by the authors against position-adjusted word count. Highlighted rows are the three methods we draw on most.
Evidence beat style
Quotation Addition lifted position-adjusted word count from 19.3 to 27.2, about 41% above baseline, and the best subjective impression gain was about 28%. Tone changes did far less.
Keyword stuffing backfired
Repeating query keywords scored below the untouched baseline, 17.7 against 19.3. On Perplexity.ai the result held, 21.9 against 24.1.
Lower-ranked sources gained most
Cite Sources raised visibility 115.1% for the fifth-ranked source, while the top-ranked source lost 30.3% on average. Quotation Addition and Statistics Addition showed the same split.
Results varied by topic
The best method changed with the subject. Authoritative writing helped most on debate and history questions, and Cite Sources on factual ones. Statistics Addition worked best for law, government and opinion questions, and Quotation Addition for people and society, explanation and history.
Pairing Fluency Optimization with Statistics Addition beat any single method by more than 5.5%, on a 200-query subset.
The limits we state to every client
- The main engine was a 2023 pipeline of five Google results and GPT-3.5 Turbo. A Perplexity.ai test showed gains up to about 37%.
- About 80% of GEO-bench queries are informational, so buying prompts are a small slice.
- The metrics measure share of answer text, not clicks, leads or revenue.
- The authors say methods may need to change as engines evolve, and they did not test effects on rankings.
- A gain for a fifth-ranked page came partly at the top page’s expense. If you already rank first, expect less.
So how does a generative engine optimization agency like Digital Magma use the paper? As hypotheses to test on your pages, never as a promised lift. When we add statistics, named quotes and citations to one page, we leave a comparable page unchanged and compare both on the same prompts. If the changed page doesn’t move, we say so. Retrieval and grounding
GEO and retrieval: how ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and Claude pick sources
Generative engine optimization starts with retrieval, because each major AI engine searches an index before it writes. This table sticks to what each company documents publicly: how it finds sources, which crawler you must allow, and where you can see data.
| Engine | How it finds sources (official docs) | Crawler to allow | Where you see data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode | May use “query fan-out”, running related searches across subtopics. Supporting links must be indexed and snippet-eligible. | Googlebot | Google Search Console, inside the Web search type |
| ChatGPT search | May rewrite a prompt into targeted queries for third-party search providers | OAI-SearchBot | GA4 referrals from chatgpt.com |
| Perplexity | Searches the web for each question and links its sources in the answer. | PerplexityBot (search), Perplexity-User (user-requested visits) | GA4 referrals from perplexity.ai |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries | Retrieves from Bing. Bing reports the “grounding queries” its AI used to fetch the pages it cited. | Bingbot | AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools |
| Gemini app | Grounding supplies content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time | Googlebot, with the Google-Extended token as the control | GA4 referrals from gemini.google.com |
| Claude | Claude-SearchBot indexes pages to improve search answers. Claude-User fetches pages when a person asks a question. | Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User | Server logs, plus GA4 where a referrer is passed |

The common thread
No engine publishes a formula for choosing between eligible pages. All of them need the page to be crawlable, indexed and clearly sourced. That is why Digital Magma, as a generative engine optimization agency, checks SEO health before anything else.
Engine-specific pages
For one engine in depth, see Google AI Overviews and AI Mode optimization and ChatGPT SEO.
Who owns what
GEO agency vs SEO, AEO and LLMO agencies: who owns what
A GEO agency owns one question the others don’t: how often are we cited across generative engines, and why not more often? SEO, AEO and LLMO each ask something different, and the table frames each discipline by its question.
| Discipline | The question it answers | Typical proof |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Do our pages rank and get clicked? | Rankings, impressions, clicks, conversions |
| AEO | Is our passage the one extracted as the answer? | Snippets and quoted answers for target questions |
| GEO | How often are we cited across generative engines, by which sources, and why not more? | Citation share on a fixed prompt panel, cited pages, grounding queries |
| LLMO | What do language models believe about our brand? | Accuracy of brand descriptions in model answers |
GEO vs SEO: the dependency
GEO sits on SEO. Google states that a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and ChatGPT search and Copilot pull from search providers too.
On “GEO vs AIO”: AIO is used loosely, for AI Overviews optimization or AI optimization in general. Ask which engines a proposal using it measures.
Our view on labels
Most buyers need one integrated programme. The label matters when you compare proposals: a generative engine optimization agency that only reports keyword rankings is selling an SEO retainer with new wording. Our AI SEO services hub shows how the disciplines fit, and SEO services covers the foundation.

Process
GEO agency process: 6 steps at Digital Magma
Digital Magma’s GEO agency process runs in six steps. The first two fix what a generative engine optimization agency measures and how, so every later change is judged against the same yardstick.
Agree the prompt set
We draft 30 to 60 buyer prompts with you, grouped by funnel stage and market. The number goes in the proposal, and you approve every prompt.
Run the baseline
Each prompt runs several times per engine. We log cited, mentioned or absent, plus every domain cited.
Analyse the sources
Cited domains are sorted by type: your site, competitors, publications, review sites, forums, directories. Then we work out why each wins.
Fix access and facts
Crawler blocks, indexing gaps, conflicting entity facts and schema errors come first, found with Screaming Frog, Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Build citable evidence
Evidence rewrites and original data pages go live, with off-site work where engines already cite.
Re-measure and test
Same prompts, runs and engines. Changed pages are compared with similar unchanged pages.
Audit
Generative engine optimization audit: finding the citation gap and its sources
A generative engine optimization audit finds your citation gap: the prompts where an engine cites other sites but not yours. The useful part is the second question. What type of source wins those prompts, and what would it take to replace it?
“You are missing from most answers” helps nobody. Knowing that review sites take the comparison prompts while trade publications win the “how does X work” prompts tells you where to spend. So Digital Magma’s GEO audit sorts every cited domain by type and matches each type to a fix.
| If the engine mostly cites… | It usually means | The fix we plan |
|---|---|---|
| Review and rating sites | The engine trusts third-party verdicts for this prompt | Accurate, complete review profiles and a steady flow of real customer reviews |
| News and trade publications | The topic rewards independent coverage | Digital PR with expert comment and original data |
| Competitors’ comparison pages | Nobody else has published a usable comparison | An honest comparison page with sourced facts, including where you lose |
| Forums and community threads | Real user experience is what the engine wants | Clearer product facts on your site and honest staff participation, never fake posts |
| Directories and listings | The prompt is local or category-based | Consistent listings, Google Business Profile and Bing Places details |
| Your own pages, but the wrong ones | A thin or outdated page is matching the prompt | Update or merge it, and link to the stronger page |
First-party clues we add
Bing’s AI Performance report lists grounding queries, the key phrases its AI used to retrieve the pages it cited. They often differ from what a person typed, and they show the wording to cover. Question-style queries in Google Search Console add Google’s side.
What the audit delivers
- A gap table by prompt, engine and cited domain, with a fix type for each row
- Crawler access, indexing and conflicting entity facts
- A ranked 90-day plan
A full AI visibility audit is a custom quote, and a standard SEO audit is USD 500. Start smaller with the free SEO audit, or read our guide to an AI search audit before hiring.
On-site evidence
Generative engine optimization content: building passages engines cite
Generative engine optimization content gives an engine something worth citing: a specific claim, the evidence behind it and a named source. The three strongest methods in the 2023 paper were all forms of evidence, so that is where Digital Magma’s generative engine optimization agency team puts most of its writing effort.
- Statistics with a named source: “fast delivery” becomes the figure, who measured it and when. No real number, no claim.
- Quotes from named people: your engineers, clinicians or founders, with their role.
- Citations to primary sources: the standard, study or official document itself, linked.
- Original research: your own pricing data, survey or benchmark. Google’s May 2025 guidance asks for “unique, non-commodity content”, and first-party data is hard for rivals to copy.
- Passage-level structure: each section names its subject and stands alone when lifted out. Bing recommends clear headings, tables and FAQ sections for the same reason.
- Real updates: when facts change, the page changes and Bing hears via IndexNow.
Writing the answer sentence itself is answer engine optimization, covered on our AI SEO hub. GEO content work is the evidence layer underneath, the part that also builds E-E-A-T.
Third-party sources
Generative engine optimization off-site: mentions, reviews and third-party sources
Generative engine optimization reaches beyond your website, because engines summarise several sources at once. What publications, review sites and directories say about you can decide whether you are cited, and whether the citation is accurate.
Digital PR and expert comment
We pitch expert commentary and data stories to the publications the citation-gap analysis shows engines citing. Each placement repeats your core facts in the same words. See our digital PR services.
Review profiles
When review sites dominate a prompt, the profile becomes the source. We fix outdated categories and descriptions and help you ask real customers for reviews. Bing also points local businesses to Bing Places.
Directories and listings
Industry directories and Google Business Profile often feed category prompts. Conflicting names or service lists give engines two stories to choose from, so we align them.
Brand mentions without links
Unlinked brand mentions can still be cited and still shape the answer, so they count for GEO. We ask for a link where it helps readers, and for a correction where the mention is wrong.
The lines we don’t cross
- Paid or fake reviews
- Sock-puppet forum posts or fake community accounts
- Link schemes or paid links passed off as editorial
- Press releases stuffed with claims nobody can check
These break Google’s spam policies and most review platforms’ rules, and they tend to resurface as negative coverage that engines then cite.
Technical access
Generative engine optimization technical work: crawler access, rendering and indexing
Generative engine optimization fails silently when a crawler can’t reach your pages. A firewall rule or a copied robots.txt line can block a search bot the client wanted, so access is the first thing any generative engine optimization agency should check, and the first thing Digital Magma does.
| User agent | Type | What the company says | Our default advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Googlebot, Bingbot | Search | Supply Google’s and Bing’s AI answers through the normal index | Allow |
| OAI-SearchBot | Search | Opted-out sites are not shown in ChatGPT search answers | Allow if you want ChatGPT citations |
| PerplexityBot | Search | Surfaces and links sites in Perplexity, not used for model training | Allow |
| Claude-SearchBot | Search | Indexes content to improve Claude’s search results | Allow |
| ChatGPT-User, Perplexity-User, Claude-User | User-initiated | Fetch a page when a person asks. Perplexity says its fetcher generally ignores robots.txt. | Don’t block by accident at the firewall |
Firewalls and CDNs
Bot rules on a web application firewall can block AI crawlers while the site still loads fine for people. Perplexity publishes allow-list steps and IP lists for this reason. We check server logs and test a fetch for each user agent, because robots.txt alone can mislead.
Content in the HTML
Google asks for important content in textual form. Where key facts only appear after scripts run, we recommend server-side rendering or pre-rendering for those templates.
Preview controls
Google says nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit how content appears in its AI experiences. Old templates sometimes carry these by mistake, so we audit each page type.
Training crawlers, in one line
GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended relate to model training, a separate policy choice. One exception matters for GEO: Google says Google-Extended also controls grounding in Gemini Apps, while Google Search is unaffected.

Beyond text
Generative engine optimization for multimodal answers: images, video and product data
Generative engine optimization now covers images, video and product data, because AI answers mix formats. Google’s May 2025 guidance notes that people snap a photo, ask about it and dig deeper with follow-ups, and asks site owners to support text with high-quality images and video.
Bing’s February 2026 post asks publishers to align text, images and video so they describe the same entities and products consistently. A photo, a page and a video transcript should tell one story.
- Images: descriptive file names, accurate alt text and captions that carry a fact
- Video: an on-page transcript and chapter titles that match buyer questions
- Product data: Merchant Center feeds whose prices and availability match the page exactly
- Local data: Google Business Profile and Bing Places details that match your site
For online stores this is often the fastest win, because feed and page mismatches are common. See our ecommerce digital marketing page.
Every month
GEO agency deliverables: what you get every month
Each month, Digital Magma’s GEO agency team sends a report you can audit line by line, plus the raw prompt results behind it. No score in it is one we invented.
- Prompt-panel report: every prompt, engine and run, marked cited, mentioned or absent
- Citation-share trend: against the baseline, shown as a range
- Bing AI Performance summary: total citations, average cited pages and grounding queries
- Search Console and GA4 summary: question impressions, AI referrals and conversions
- Changes shipped: pages edited, schema added, off-site placements won
- Test results: changed pages compared with control pages
- Next month’s plan and a call scheduled in your time zone
More on good reporting: AI SEO agency reporting deliverables.
Measurement
GEO measurement: citation share, Bing AI Performance and prompt panels
GEO measurement rests on one main metric, citation share, backed by first-party data from Bing, Google and your analytics. Each source is incomplete alone, so Digital Magma reports them side by side, the way a generative engine optimization agency should.
Citation share
The paper measured share of answer text. We track something easier to check: prompts where you are cited, divided by prompts run, per engine. These AI citations sit beside mention accuracy and the pages cited.
Bing AI Performance report
Total citations, average cited pages, grounding queries and page-level citations across Copilot, Bing’s AI summaries and some partners. It reports citations, not clicks, and Bing says figures reflect citation patterns, not page importance.
Google Search Console
Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic within the Web search type. We watch impressions and clicks on the question-style queries we target.
GA4 referrals
A channel group for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com, with conversions. GA4 referrals can undercount when an app passes no referrer, but the trend helps.
Prompt panels
Answers change between runs and users, so one screenshot proves little. We run each prompt several times per engine and report ranges, with the raw log attached.
Why citations matter
Pew Research Center found US users clicked a result in 8% of Google visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary 1% of the time.
Metrics we refuse to sell as proof
- A single screenshot of one answer
- “AI rank #1” from a tool that won’t explain its method
- Domain authority scores on their own
- Citation counts with no prompt list behind them

SEO results that built the base
Generative engine optimization foundations: three Digital Magma case studies
Generative engine optimization needs an indexed, trusted site underneath it, and these three anonymised Digital Magma projects show that foundation. They are SEO results, so we claim no AI citation figures for them.

Industries
Generative engine optimization by industry: where citations shape the shortlist
Generative engine optimization matters most where buyers ask an AI tool to compare options before they contact anyone. The cited source type differs by sector, and so does the work Digital Magma plans.
SaaS and B2B
“Best tool for X” prompts lean on review sites and analyst-style articles. Fair comparison pages and accurate review profiles do most of the work.
Healthcare
Health prompts favour cited medical sources and named clinicians. No claim goes live without a reviewer and a primary source.
Ecommerce
Product prompts pull from feeds, images and reviews as well as pages. Matching data across all of them comes first.
Education
Course prompts cite rankings, official listings and student forums. Accurate fees, dates and accreditation facts matter most.
Real estate
Project prompts draw on listing portals and local news, so project details must match across portals.
Local services
City prompts lean on Google Business Profile, Bing Places and review sites. Local SEO starts from USD 500 a month.

What drives the cost of a GEO programme
- Size of the prompt set and number of markets
- Engines tracked and runs per prompt
- Volume of content rewrites
- Original-data projects and digital PR scope
- Technical debt that blocks crawlers
- Expert review in health, finance or legal topics
What a GEO proposal should state
- The prompts, engines and runs per prompt
- Monthly deliverables and report format
- Term and notice period
- What you keep if you leave: content, prompt sets and raw data
On market rates, we found only figures published by agencies and tool vendors, and no independent survey, so we don’t repeat them.
How your service quote is scoped
₹40,000 is our minimum paid engagement, not a fixed price for every service or a promise that every deliverable is included. For this service, the quote depends on website size, technical complexity, locations and languages, content production, authority work and SEO or AI-search reporting.
Recurring work is quoted per month; a standalone audit, build or production project is quoted separately. Your proposal confirms deliverables, quantities, timelines, revisions, applicable taxes and third-party costs before work begins. Larger programmes are custom quoted with no upper price limit.
Your options
Generative engine optimization options compared: agency, in-house, consultant or software
Generative engine optimization can be bought four ways, and they differ mainly in who does the fixing. Software reports gaps and people close them, so choose based on who will change your pages.
| Option | Content, off-site, technical, measurement | Time to start | Cost type | Who executes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generative engine optimization agency | All four | Weeks | Monthly retainer | The agency, with your sign-off | Teams without specialist time to spare |
| In-house hire | Depends on one person’s range | Months to recruit | Salary plus tools | Your employee | Large sites with a steady publishing flow |
| Independent consultant | Usually strategy and audits | Days to weeks | Project or day rate | Your team, following advice | Companies with writers and developers already |
| Tracking software only | Measurement | Same day | Subscription | Nobody, unless you act | Teams that only need monitoring |
Many companies combine tracking software for daily monitoring with an agency or consultant who runs the baseline and does the work.
Buyer’s guide
GEO agency checklist: questions to ask before you sign
A good generative engine optimization agency answers these questions plainly, with examples. Ask them of every provider, Digital Magma included, and treat vague answers as a warning.
Questions to ask
- Who writes the prompt panel, how many runs per prompt, and can I see the raw results?
- How do you define a citation, and how is that different from a mention?
- What will you change on my site and off-site in month one?
- Which AI user agents can reach my site today, and how did you check?
- What will you refuse to do?
- What do I own if I cancel: content, data, prompt sets?
Red flags
- Guaranteed placement in ChatGPT or AI Overviews
- A “proprietary AI rank” with no published method
- No SEO foundation work in the plan
- A long contract signed before any baseline exists
- Fake reviews or forum posts offered as a tactic
Digital Magma’s own answers: you approve the panel, we share the raw log, a citation is a linked source while a mention is your name unlinked, and everything we create stays yours.
What to expect
GEO results timeline: the first 30, 60 and 90 days
GEO results arrive in stages, with access fixes showing first and off-site authority last. This is how a typical Digital Magma programme unfolds over its first quarter.
Panel, baseline, access
Prompt set approved, baseline logged, crawler fixes shipped. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems, and Perplexity says up to 24 hours.
Evidence and off-site work
Data and comparison pages published, PR pitches out, review profiles corrected. Second panel run and early Bing citation data.
Compare and scale
Results compared with the baseline and control pages. What moved citation share gets scaled, and the rest is dropped.
Off-site mentions and authority take longer than on-page fixes, often several months. Google’s own documentation says that crawling, indexing and serving are never guaranteed, even for a page that meets every requirement.
Honest limits
Generative engine optimization limits: what no agency can promise
Generative engine optimization can raise your odds of being cited, but no generative engine optimization agency controls the outcome, and Digital Magma won’t pretend otherwise. These limits come from the engines’ own documentation and the research itself.
- Black boxes that change: no engine publishes how it picks between eligible sources.
- Run-to-run variance: the same prompt can cite different sources an hour later. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT’s results and citations can be “incomplete, outdated, or incorrect”.
- Effects differ by topic: in the study, one method helped some domains far more than others, and lifted low-ranked sources at the top source’s expense.
- No serving guarantee: Google says meeting every requirement doesn’t guarantee crawling, indexing or serving.

FAQs
Generative engine optimization agency FAQs
Generative engine optimization agency questions from US, UK, Canadian and Australian buyers, answered by Digital Magma with sources where they exist.
What does a generative engine optimization agency do?
A generative engine optimization agency measures how often AI engines cite your brand for a fixed set of buyer prompts, finds the sources cited instead, and improves your content, off-site mentions, crawler access and entity facts to raise that share. Digital Magma reports monthly, with the raw prompt log attached.
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO ranks pages and earns clicks. GEO earns citations inside AI-generated answers. GEO depends on SEO, because Google says a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear in AI Overviews.
Is GEO the same as AEO or LLMO?
GEO overlaps with both but asks a different question. AEO is about being the extracted answer, LLMO about what models believe about a brand, and GEO about citation share across generative engines. Most programmes combine all three.
Where did the term generative engine optimization come from?
The term comes from a 2023 paper by Aggarwal and colleagues from IIT Delhi, Princeton University and independent research, accepted to KDD 2024. It introduced GEO-bench, a 10,000-query benchmark, and tested nine content methods.
Does the GEO research really show a 40% lift?
The paper reports up to about 40% higher visibility, with Quotation Addition scoring 27.2 against a 19.3 baseline. That measures share of answer text in a 2023 test with GPT-3.5 Turbo and five Google results, not clicks or sales, and results varied by topic.
How do ChatGPT and Perplexity decide which sites to cite?
Neither publishes a formula. OpenAI says ChatGPT may rewrite prompts into queries for search providers, and OAI-SearchBot must be allowed. Perplexity searches the web for each question and links sources. Crawlable, indexed pages with clear evidence have the best odds.
How much does a GEO agency cost?
Digital Magma quotes GEO programmes individually, based on prompts, markets, engines and content volume. Published anchors: SEO audit USD 500 and ongoing SEO from USD 600 a month, plus taxes. We found no independent survey of GEO prices.
How long does generative engine optimization take to work?
Access fixes register fast: OpenAI cites about 24 hours for robots.txt changes, and Perplexity up to 24 hours. Content changes need a few weeks to be recrawled, and off-site authority takes months. We compare against the baseline at day 90.
Can a GEO agency guarantee my brand gets cited?
No honest generative engine optimization agency can guarantee citations. Answers vary between runs, Google says serving is never guaranteed, and OpenAI warns citations can be incomplete or incorrect. An agency can raise your odds and prove the change with repeatable measurement.
How do you measure GEO results?
Citation share is the main metric: prompts where you are cited, divided by prompts run, per engine. Bing’s AI Performance report adds citations and grounding queries, Search Console adds question-query data, and GA4 tracks AI referral visits and conversions.
Do I need to block or allow AI crawlers for GEO?
Allow the search crawlers: Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot. Training crawlers are a separate choice. Watch Google-Extended, because Google says it also controls grounding in Gemini Apps.
Does GEO replace traditional SEO?
GEO adds to SEO. Generative engines retrieve from search indexes, so indexing and technical health still decide whether you can be cited at all. Budgets shift toward evidence, off-site sources and citation tracking.
Can a US business or agency work with a GEO agency in India?
A US business or agency can work well with an India-based generative engine optimization agency once hours are agreed. Digital Magma works 9 am to 9 pm IST, covering US Eastern mornings. You keep Admin access, and agencies can buy white-label GEO with an NDA on request.
What should I prepare before hiring a GEO agency?
Prepare access to Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4, the questions buyers ask your sales team, any first-party data you can publish, and one person who can approve facts. A list of competitors you lose deals to helps build the prompt set.
