AEO agency: what answer engine optimization means in 2026
An AEO agency makes your content the answer that search and AI tools give. Answer engine optimization means finding the questions buyers ask, answering each one in the first sentence, backing it with evidence and structure, and keeping pages crawlable. Digital Magma’s AEO agency work targets featured snippets, People Also Ask, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and voice assistants.
The short version
Answer engine optimization works on answers, not whole pages
Answer engine optimization treats the answer as the unit of work. One question, one direct answer, then the proof. A page can hold twenty of those units, and each one has its own chance of being lifted into a snippet, a chat reply or a spoken result.
The term is older than ChatGPT. Search marketers used “answer engine” for featured snippets and voice assistants years before generative chatbots arrived, and the same idea now covers AI answers too. The habit that wins hasn’t changed much: say the thing plainly, early, and back it up.
In practice, a Digital Magma AEO engagement looks like this week to week. We research questions, rewrite sections so the answer comes first, add tables and schema where they help, clear crawl and index blockers, test the answers in each engine and report what moved. If you want the wider picture of AI search work, including citations and brand knowledge inside language models, start with our AI SEO services hub. This page covers the answer layer only.
Side by side
AEO agency vs SEO, GEO and LLMO agencies: where answer engine optimization fits
An AEO agency optimizes answer passages, while SEO ranks pages, GEO raises visibility inside generative answers across engines and LLMO shapes what models say about a brand. The four overlap, and the table shows where each one starts and stops.
| Discipline | What is optimized | Main surfaces | Success signal | Typical work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Whole pages and sites | Classic Google and Bing results | Rankings, clicks, leads | Technical fixes, content, links |
| AEO | Answer passages | Snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews, chat answers, voice | The quoted answer and the named source | Question research, answer-first rewrites, schema |
| GEO | Inclusion in generated answers | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Mode | Citation share across engines | Research-led content and evidence changes |
| LLMO | What models know about a brand | Answers given with or without live search | Accurate brand description | Entity facts, mentions, crawler policy |
AEO sits on top of SEO. Google says a page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google Search Central guidance on AI Overviews and AI Mode). So if your SEO services base is weak, answer work has nothing to stand on. Our view: buy outcomes and named deliverables, not acronyms. Most good programmes end up doing a bit of all four.
Coverage
AEO agency coverage: the answer engines we optimize for and how each picks an answer
Digital Magma’s AEO agency team works on six answer surfaces. Each picks its answer a little differently, so each card below sticks to what the company behind it has published.
Featured snippets and People Also Ask
The original extracted answer. Google pulls a short passage, list or table from a ranking page and shows it above or among the results. Still visible on many question searches, and still a good test of whether your answer is clean enough to lift.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google says both Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode may use query fan-out, running several related searches across subtopics, and that AI Overviews only appear when its systems judge them additive to classic results. See our AI Overviews optimization page for the detail.
ChatGPT search
OpenAI’s help centre says ChatGPT search often rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries sent to search partners, then shows citations. That rewrite step is why we test many phrasings. More on our ChatGPT SEO page.
Perplexity
Perplexity answers with linked sources. Its crawler documentation says PerplexityBot is the agent that surfaces and links websites in results, so a blocked PerplexityBot means no citation there.
Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries
Copilot grounds answers in Bing. Since February 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools shows citation data for Copilot and Bing AI summaries in a public preview, which makes this the easiest engine to measure.
Voice assistants
Google Assistant, Siri and Alexa read out one short answer. Beyond Google’s speakable markup, which is still in beta, no assistant publishes an optimization spec, so we write for clarity and test by ear.
Full scope
AEO services from Digital Magma: everything included
Digital Magma’s AEO services fall into six groups, and every item is a deliverable you can see on your site or in a report. Most programmes start with research and technical access, because rewrites are wasted if engines can’t reach the page.

Process
AEO agency process: 6 steps from question research to re-testing
The Digital Magma AEO agency process has six steps, and it always starts with a baseline, so every later change is measured against a fixed starting point.
Baseline
Crawl the site with Screaming Frog, check indexing in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, review bot access, record current snippets and People Also Ask boxes in Ahrefs or Semrush, then run the first prompt panel.
Question inventory
Collect questions from Search Console, People Also Ask, autocomplete, your sales and support teams and forums, then group them by intent.
Prioritize
Start with questions that carry buying intent and already have a page ranking in the top 20, because those move fastest.
Rewrite and structure
Write answer units, add tables and lists, apply schema that matches the page and add internal links between related answers.
Re-index and notify
Request indexing through URL Inspection in Search Console and ping Bing through IndexNow, which Bing itself recommends for keeping AI answers current.
Re-test and report
Run the same prompts in the same engines each month, several times each, and log what changed and why.
Research method
Answer engine optimization research: how we find the questions buyers actually ask
Answer engine optimization research starts with your own data, then moves outward to result boxes, forums and AI prompts, noting the search intent behind each question. Guessed questions produce answers nobody asked for.
- Search Console first: we filter queries containing who, what, how, why, cost, vs and best. Questions with healthy impressions and weak click-through are usually the first targets, because Google already associates your page with them.
- People Also Ask and autocomplete: captured per market (US, UK and Australian results differ) and dated, since both change.
- Your sales calls and support tickets: the best source and the one most often skipped. The wording a prospect uses on a call is the wording they type into ChatGPT.
- Forums and communities: Reddit, Quora and industry groups show real phrasing and real objections. We read them. We never post fake answers.
- Prompt variants: each need is phrased five to ten ways, short, long, comparison and local, because ChatGPT rewrites prompts into search queries before it looks anything up.
Writing
Answer engine optimization content: how to write an answer AI can quote
Answer engine optimization content puts the direct answer in the first sentence, names the subject, then adds two to four sentences of detail, a list or table, and a source. Here is the anatomy, followed by a worked example.
1. Question as heading
Use the buyer’s phrasing. “How much does X cost?” beats “Our pricing philosophy”.
2. Answer in sentence one
45 words or fewer, with the subject named, so the sentence still makes sense when quoted alone.
3. Detail and format
Two to four sentences, then a list, steps or a table if the answer has parts.
4. Source or example
A named publisher, a specific figure or a quote from a named expert. Named authors with real credentials are part of E-E-A-T too.
Worked example: the same question, before and after
Before (rarely quoted)
Question: Does FAQ schema still show rich results?
“FAQ schema has been a favourite of SEO professionals for years, and there is plenty of debate about it online. In this article we will look back at the history of structured data, how search engines have changed, and what all of this might mean for your website going forward…”
- No answer in the first 100 words
- Missing a date, a source and a figure
- Depends on what comes next to make sense
After (easy to lift)
Question: Does FAQ schema still show rich results?
“FAQ rich results now appear only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites, according to Google’s August 2023 Search Central update. Other sites can keep FAQPage markup, which Google says causes no problems, but it will not produce the expandable FAQ result.”
- Answer in sentence one
- Named source and date
- Stands alone if quoted
Self-contained passages
Each section should make sense lifted on its own. Phrases like “as mentioned above” break that, because the engine quoting you has no “above”.
Evidence beats volume
A 2023 study by Aggarwal and colleagues, published at KDD 2024, found that adding citations, quotations and statistics raised visibility in generative answers, while keyword stuffing did worse than doing nothing.
Formats that lift cleanly
Definitions, numbered steps, comparison tables, pros and cons, short FAQs. Bing’s own guidance names clear headings, tables and FAQ sections as helpful for AI answers.
Freshness matters, and only real freshness counts. We show a visible “Updated” date and change it when the facts change, never as a cosmetic date swap.
Structured data, honestly
AEO and structured data: what schema does and does not do for answers
AEO uses structured data for clarity, and it does not buy you a place in AI answers. Google states that no special schema is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that structured data must match the visible text on the page.
FAQ markup also changed. In August 2023, Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health websites and began phasing out HowTo rich results. The same announcement said unused markup does not cause problems, so there is no reason to rip it out.
So why does Digital Magma still add FAQPage schema, HowTo schema and Organization schema? Because JSON-LD gives machines an unambiguous copy of the facts: who you are, who wrote the answer, what the steps are. Bing and other systems read structured data, and it costs very little. That is our reasoning, and we present it as reasoning, not as a ranking promise.
Voice
AEO for voice search: speakable answers assistants can read aloud
AEO for voice search comes down to one thing: an assistant reads a single answer, so your first two or three sentences must stand alone when spoken. Nobody hears your table, your sidebar or your second paragraph.
Google’s speakable markup is still in beta. It works for users in the US with Google Home devices set to English, it is aimed at news content, and Google recommends about 20 to 30 seconds of content per speakable section. Most business pages are not news, so speakable schema is a low-cost signal for us, never a promise of a voice placement.
Local voice questions are different. “Is there a plumber open now near me?” is answered from map listings, so accurate Google Business Profile and Bing Places details matter more than page copy. Bing’s guidance names Bing Places for exactly this. Digital Magma’s local SEO services handle that side, from USD 500 a month.
Every month
AEO agency deliverables: what you get every month
Each month, Digital Magma’s AEO agency team sends the same core set of deliverables, logged in a shared tracker so you can see what changed and why. The number of pages rewritten is agreed in your proposal.
- Updated question map: new questions added, answered ones marked
- Pages rewritten: before and after copies kept side by side
- Schema change log: what was added, where, and its validation result
- Access and indexing check: bots, robots.txt and index status
- Prompt panel results: engines, prompts, runs, whether you were cited, and who was cited instead
- Search Console and Bing AI Performance summary
- Next month’s plan and a 30-minute review call at a time that suits both time zones
For a sample of what a good report contains, read our guide to AI SEO agency reporting and deliverables.
Measurement
AEO measurement: how an AEO agency should prove progress
AEO measurement should rely on first-party data from Google, Bing and your own analytics, with a repeated prompt sample on top. No single tool shows the full picture, so we combine five sources and say where each one falls short.
Google Search Console
Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the Performance report under the “Web” search type. There is no separate AI filter, so we track impressions and clicks on the specific questions we target.
Bing AI Performance report
Bing Webmaster Tools reports Total Citations, Average Cited Pages, grounding queries and page-level citations for Copilot and Bing AI summaries (Bing Webmaster Blog, February 2026). It shows no clicks.
GA4 referrals
A segment for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com, with the leads and sales those sessions produce. GA4 referrals can undercount, because some chat apps do not pass a referrer.
Prompt panel
A fixed list of buyer prompts, run several times per engine each month because answers vary between runs. Each result is logged as cited, mentioned or absent. We count AI citations and brand mentions separately, and note which competitors were cited instead.
Snippet and PAA ownership
Featured snippet and People Also Ask data from Ahrefs or Semrush, checked against what we see in a clean browser for the target market.
The honest limit
No tool shows true ChatGPT impressions. Treat panel results as a sample, read trends over several months, and judge the programme on leads, branded search and assisted conversions.
The data
AEO and zero-click search: what the US data means for your brand
AEO matters more as zero-click search grows, because the summary is often the whole visit. The clearest independent numbers come from a Pew Research Center analysis published in July 2025, based on the March 2025 browsing of 900 US adults.
- When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a standard result on 8% of visits. Without one, they clicked on 15%.
- Only 1% of visits with a summary included a click on a link inside it.
- 18% of the Google searches in the sample produced an AI summary.
- 26% of visits with a summary ended the browsing session, against 16% without one.
Our reading: being the named answer is brand exposure even when nobody clicks. That changes what you should measure. Count leads, branded searches and assisted conversions alongside sessions.
SEO results that built the answer foundation
AEO foundations: three Digital Magma case studies
AEO needs a crawlable, answer-rich site underneath it, and these three anonymised Digital Magma projects show that base. They are SEO results that predate our AEO tracking, so we claim no AI citation figures for them.

Working together
AEO agency for US, UK, Canadian and Australian brands: working with Digital Magma from India
Hiring an AEO agency in India works well when hours, spelling and reporting are agreed up front. Digital Magma works remotely from Noida, Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 9 pm India time, and here is how that maps to your day.
US East Coast and Toronto
Our day ends at 11:30 am Eastern while daylight time runs, and at 10:30 am after the clocks go back in November. Morning calls work well.
United Kingdom
Our hours cover 4:30 am to 4:30 pm in British Summer Time, and 3:30 am to 3:30 pm once the UK returns to GMT. Most of your working day overlaps.
Sydney and Melbourne
We start at 2:30 pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time, so your afternoon and early evening overlap with our working day.
US West Coast and Vancouver
Overlap is short, so we agree one fixed early-morning or evening slot and send written updates in between.
Your spelling
We write in US, UK or Australian English to match your site. A UK client gets “optimisation”, and a US client gets “optimization”.
One real address
Digital Magma has one office, in Sector 137, Noida. We don’t invent US or UK offices, and we work with you remotely.
For agencies
White-label delivery is available: work under your brand, unbranded or partner-branded reports, NDA on request, and no contact with your client unless you ask.
You keep Admin access to your own Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4 accounts throughout. Country pages: USA · UK · Canada · Australia.
Pricing
AEO pricing: what answer engine optimization costs and what drives it
AEO pricing at Digital Magma is a custom quote after a project discussion, because scope varies so much between sites. Answer work usually sits on top of a working SEO base, and those SEO prices are published below.
SEO audit
Baseline before any answer work.
USD 500 one-time
- Crawl, index and bot-access check
- Snippet and PAA baseline
- Prioritized fix list
Ongoing SEO
The base answer engines draw from.
From USD 600 /month
- Technical and on-page SEO
- Content and internal links
- Monthly report and call
AEO programme
Question research to monthly re-tests.
Custom quote
- Question map and prompt panel
- Answer-first rewrites and schema
- Monthly measurement
Prices are plus applicable taxes. Clients billed in India see rupee pricing, where the SEO audit is ₹40,000 plus GST. Full plans are on our SEO packages page.
What drives the cost of answer engine optimization
- Number of pages and questions in scope
- How much new content is needed
- Technical fixes before answers can be read
- Schema scope across templates
- Engines tracked and prompts in the panel
- Markets and languages
- Expert review for healthcare or finance answers
What any AEO proposal should list
- Pages and questions covered each month
- Engines tested and the prompt count
- Reporting format and schedule
- Contract length and notice period
- What you own if you leave: all content, data and accounts
On market rates: we found only price ranges published by agencies and tool vendors, and no independent survey, so we don’t quote them here.
How your service quote is scoped
₹40,000 is our minimum paid engagement, not a fixed price for every service or a promise that every deliverable is included. For this service, the quote depends on website size, technical complexity, locations and languages, content production, authority work and SEO or AI-search reporting.
Recurring work is quoted per month; a standalone audit, build or production project is quoted separately. Your proposal confirms deliverables, quantities, timelines, revisions, applicable taxes and third-party costs before work begins. Larger programmes are custom quoted with no upper price limit.
Options
AEO agency vs in-house team vs freelancer vs DIY tools
An AEO agency covers research, writing, schema, technical access and measurement in one team. The other three options each cover part of that list, and the right choice depends on who will actually change your pages.
| Option | Skills covered | Speed to start | Cost type | Who fixes problems | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AEO agency | Research, writing, schema, technical, measurement | Weeks | Monthly retainer | The agency, with your approval | Teams without spare specialist time |
| In-house hire | Depends on one person’s range | Months to hire and train | Salary and tools | Your hire | Large sites with constant content flow |
| Freelancer | Usually writing or technical, rarely both | Days | Per project or hourly | The freelancer, within scope | One-off rewrites of a few pages |
| Monitoring tool only | Measurement | Same day | Subscription | Nobody, unless your team acts | Teams that already have writers and developers |
A monitoring tool can show you where you are missing from answers. It cannot rewrite a page, fix a robots.txt rule or get an expert to approve a claim.
Buyer’s guide
AEO agency checklist: how to choose one and the red flags
Choose an AEO agency that shows you a baseline before it pitches, explains its testing method and names the people doing the work. Use this checklist on every provider you talk to, Digital Magma included.
Green flags
- Shows your baseline before the sales pitch
- Explains its prompt panel and how many runs per engine
- Separates cited, mentioned and absent in reports
- Fixes technical access before writing
- Names the people who will do the work
- Month-to-month or a short first term
- You own all content and data
Red flags
- Guaranteed AI Overview or ChatGPT placement
- “AEO means adding FAQ schema”
- Fake reviews or review markup
- Seeding Reddit or Quora with fake accounts
- Reports that show rankings and nothing else
- A long lock-in before any baseline exists
Questions to ask any answer engine optimization agency
- Which engines, how many prompts, and how often are they re-run?
- What exactly will you change on my site in month one?
- What do you do when an engine says something wrong about us?
- What do I keep if I cancel?
What to expect
AEO results timeline: what to expect in 30, 60 and 90 days
AEO results show up in stages over the first 90 days, and the pace depends on your site’s authority and how contested your questions are. This is the typical path in a Digital Magma programme.
Baseline and access
Baseline logged, bot and index fixes shipped, question map built, first rewrites live. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems, and Perplexity says up to 24 hours.
Rewrites indexed
Rewritten pages re-indexed, first snippet and People Also Ask movement visible in Search Console, second prompt panel run.
Compare and scale
Panel runs compared, new questions added, and a decision on which page types to scale next.
Google’s own documentation says indexing and serving are not guaranteed, even when a page meets every requirement. Sources: OpenAI crawler documentation, Perplexity crawler documentation, Google Search Central.
Myths
AEO myths and mistakes that waste budget
Most wasted AEO budget goes on one of six beliefs, each easy to check against what Google, OpenAI and Perplexity have actually published.
“Google needs an llms.txt file”
Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
“FAQ schema gets you into AI answers”
No special schema is required, and FAQ rich results have been restricted since 2023. Markup helps clarity, nothing more.
“AEO replaces SEO”
AI Overviews only use pages that are indexed and snippet-eligible. Without SEO there is nothing to quote.
“Stuff in more keywords”
In the 2023 GEO study, keyword stuffing performed worse than leaving the text alone.
“Block every AI bot to protect content”
Blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot removes you from their search answers. Blocking training bots such as GPTBot is a separate decision.
“It’s a one-off project”
Answers drift as engines, competitors and your own facts change. Without monthly re-tests, gains fade quietly.
Honest advice
AEO agency not needed? When to skip answer engine optimization for now
An AEO agency is the wrong buy in some situations, and Digital Magma will tell you so on the first call. Answer work multiplies a working site. It can’t replace one.
- Your site isn’t indexed, or has fewer than ten useful pages. Fix the basics with SEO services first.
- Nobody can supply or approve expert facts. Answers without a reviewer are a risk, especially in health or finance.
- Your claims are regulated and can’t be published. If legal won’t let you state the answer, nobody can quote it.
- The budget only covers tracking. Reports with nobody to act on them change nothing.
- Your buyers don’t use search or AI tools to choose. Rare, but possible. Check Search Console and your sales calls before you decide.
For B2B teams weighing the decision, our post on hiring an AI SEO agency for B2B leads walks through the same questions.

FAQs
AEO agency FAQs
AEO agency questions we hear most from US, UK, Canadian and Australian buyers, answered by Digital Magma in plain terms.
What does an AEO agency do?
An AEO agency finds the questions your buyers ask, rewrites your pages so each answer comes first and stands alone, adds schema that matches the page, removes crawl and index blockers, and tests whether Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and voice assistants use your answer. Digital Magma reports the results monthly.
Is AEO different from SEO, or is it just SEO renamed?
AEO is a focused layer of SEO. SEO ranks whole pages, while AEO shapes individual answers so they can be extracted and quoted. It depends on SEO, because Google only uses indexed, snippet-eligible pages in AI Overviews. An agency that sells AEO without checking your SEO base is skipping a step.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO focuses on the answer passage: question research, answer-first writing, snippets, People Also Ask and voice. GEO looks at how often generative engines include and cite your content across many prompts, and which content changes raise that. In practice they share most tactics, and good programmes do both.
Do I need an AEO agency if I already have an SEO agency?
That depends on what your SEO agency already does. If it researches questions, writes answer-first sections, tracks snippets and runs prompt tests, you may not need anyone else. If it reports rankings only, a specialist can work alongside it. Digital Magma is happy to coordinate with your current agency.
How much does an AEO agency cost?
Digital Magma quotes AEO programmes individually after a project discussion. Our published anchors are an SEO audit at USD 500 one-time and ongoing SEO from USD 600 a month, plus applicable taxes. Cost rises with pages, questions, engines tracked, markets and any expert review your sector needs.
How long does answer engine optimization take to show results?
Answer engine optimization often shows early movement within 30 to 60 days for pages that already rank, mainly snippets and People Also Ask. Wider changes in AI answers take longer and vary with site authority and competition. Google itself says indexing and serving are never guaranteed.
Can an AEO agency guarantee my brand will appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?
No AEO agency can honestly guarantee that. Google says serving is not guaranteed even when a page meets every requirement, and OpenAI says ChatGPT’s citations can be incomplete or wrong. Digital Magma improves your odds and reports a repeatable sample of results each month.
Which AI platforms does Digital Magma’s AEO work cover?
Digital Magma’s AEO work covers Google featured snippets and People Also Ask, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries, and voice assistants. We can add Gemini to the prompt panel when your buyers use it.
How do you measure AEO results without ChatGPT data?
We combine Search Console data on target questions, Bing’s AI Performance report for Copilot citations, GA4 referrals from chat tools, a monthly prompt panel run several times per engine, and snippet data from Ahrefs or Semrush. Together they show direction, even without ChatGPT impressions.
Does FAQ schema still help in 2026?
FAQ schema rarely produces rich results now, because Google limited them to authoritative government and health sites in 2023. It still gives machines a clean question-and-answer version of your page, so we keep it where the FAQs are real and visible. Treat it as clarity, not a ranking lever.
Does AEO work for voice search and smart speakers?
AEO helps voice search because assistants read one short answer, and answer-first writing produces exactly that. Google’s speakable markup is a beta for US English news content on Google Home, so for most businesses the gains come from clear writing and accurate business listings.
Can a US company work with an AEO agency in India?
A US company can work well with an AEO agency in India once hours and reporting are agreed, and the time difference can help: work happens while you sleep. Digital Magma works 9 am to 9 pm India time, which overlaps East Coast mornings. We write in US English, you keep Admin access to your accounts, and NDAs are available on request.
Should I block AI bots like GPTBot to protect my content?
Blocking GPTBot stops OpenAI using your pages for model training, but it is OAI-SearchBot that decides whether you appear in ChatGPT search. Blocking that, or PerplexityBot, removes you from those answers. Most businesses that want visibility allow the search bots and decide on training bots separately.
What does an AEO agency need from my team?
An AEO agency needs access to Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4, a way to publish changes, and one person who can confirm facts and approve answers. Sales call notes and support tickets help a lot, because they hold the questions buyers really ask.
