What Is AI SEO? From Crawl Access to a Cited Answer

How AI tools find, trust and name a business, how to measure it, and where to begin.

What is AI SEO? The short answer

AI SEO is the work of making a website findable, quotable and trusted by AI search tools such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Most of these tools search an index before they write, so AI SEO rests on classic SEO. It adds answer-ready passages, consistent brand facts and crawler access.

You will also hear it called AI search optimisation. Three narrower labels describe parts of the same job: generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO) and LLM optimization (LLMO).

Key takeaways

  • Google says its AI features grow out of its core ranking systems, so SEO basics come first.
  • To be cited in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page has to be indexed and allowed to show a snippet.
  • Search Console’s Generative AI performance report has counted AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions for all sites since 31 August 2026.
  • Google’s July 2026 guide says llms.txt, chunking and special schema are unnecessary for Google.
  • Nobody can guarantee a citation in ChatGPT or any other assistant.
What is AI SEO: a pipeline from crawl access to a cited AI answer

AI SEO: how it works, from crawl access to a cited answer

AI SEO follows a chain of five stages, and a page can fall out at any one of them.

  1. Crawl. A bot such as Googlebot, Bingbot or OAI-SearchBot must reach the page. Robots.txt, a firewall or a CDN can stop it.
  2. Index. The page has to be stored and eligible to show. Google says a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  3. Retrieve. The system searches for material. Google’s guide names two techniques: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), also called grounding, and query fan-out, a burst of related searches run at once.
  4. Answer. A language model writes a reply from the passages it fetched.
  5. Cite. A few sources get a visible link. Others shape the reply and get no credit at all.

Google stated the principle in its guide Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search, updated on 10 July 2026.

Its AI features are “rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems.”

Access rules elsewhere are just as strict. OpenAI’s crawler overview says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot to surface and link sites.

A second layer sits underneath. Without a live search, an assistant relies on what its model absorbed in training, so how the wider web describes your brand matters.

That half looks like PR, which is why Digital Magma audits both layers first.

AI SEO vs SEO, GEO, AEO and LLMO compared

AI SEO is the umbrella term in this knowledge base. The other labels each name one slice of the same work.

TermMain goalWhere it showsHow you track it
SEORank pages for searchesClassic results and rich resultsRankings, clicks, Search Console Performance report
AI SEOBe found, quoted and described correctly by AI toolsAI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, CopilotAI impressions, citations, prompt checks
GEOGet cited inside generated answersEngines that write from retrieved sourcesCitation and mention share
AEOBe the passage lifted as the answerFeatured snippets, voice, AI answersSnippets held, passages quoted
LLMOShape what models say about a brandChat replies with no live searchAccuracy of brand descriptions

Google is blunt about the labels. Its July 2026 guide says that, from Google Search’s view, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO.

The same guide asks site owners to check any third-party AEO or GEO advice against Google’s guidance on hiring SEO help.

Digital Magma reads the five labels as one checklist. If a vendor sells GEO and SEO as two unrelated retainers, ask which tasks differ.

AI SEO for a business: why it matters now

AI SEO matters because the answer now often arrives before the links, and fewer people click through.

Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. Its short read of 22 July 2025 reported the click rates below.

AI SEO click data: 15% of visits clicked a result without an AI summary, 8% with one
Source: Pew Research Center, March 2025 browsing data, published 22 July 2025.

With an AI summary on the page, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits.

Without one, they did so in 15% of visits. A link inside the summary got clicked in just 1% of visits.

Google tells the other side. Its guide on AI features says clicks from pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, as visitors tend to stay longer. That is Google describing its own product.

Usage keeps rising as well. In a May 2025 post, Google said AI Overviews drove an over 10% rise in usage for the queries that show them, in big markets like the US and India.

Both can hold at once: fewer clicks, but warmer ones. The quiet risk is absence. An assistant names three rivals, and you never hear about the lost enquiry.

AI SEO: what to do first (6 steps)

AI SEO starts with access and evidence, then content. This is the order Digital Magma follows when a business asks where to begin.

  1. Check crawler access. Read robots.txt for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Then check the CDN and firewall, which Google also lists as crawl blockers.
  2. Confirm indexing on Google and Bing. Use Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing’s AI report covers Microsoft Copilot, so a page missing from Bing loses that route.
  3. Check the Search Console AI setting. Google’s July 2026 guide adds a condition: the site must be included in Search generative AI features. That is the default, so confirm nobody switched it off.
  4. Make key content render as HTML. If important text appears only after JavaScript runs, fix that early. Our team moved one anonymised UK tele-oncology startup from React to Next.js. It ranked for 30+ keywords in month one, 8 at #1, a classic SEO result.
  5. Write answer-first, first-hand content. Google’s guide asks for “non-commodity” content: expert or experienced takes beyond common knowledge. Put a direct answer under each question heading, then the detail.
  6. Make brand facts match everywhere. Name, address, phone, services and founder should agree on your site, Google Business Profile and directories.

How to measure AI SEO: Search Console, Bing AI Performance and prompt checks

Measuring AI SEO takes three sources, because no single report sees every assistant.

Google Search Console: Generative AI performance report

Google’s help page for the report says it reached all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026. It shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode.

You can group the data by page, country, date or device. An impression means a link to your site was shown in one of those features.

Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance

Microsoft introduced AI Performance as a public preview on 10 February 2026. It counts citations across Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and some partner tools.

The dashboard reports total citations, average cited pages, citations per URL and grounding queries. Those are the phrases the AI used when it fetched your content.

Prompt checks for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini

Neither report covers ChatGPT or Perplexity. For those, keep a fixed list of 20 to 50 buyer questions. Run it each month and log which brands each tool names and links.

Digital Magma reads all three together each month. Treat paid trackers with care: Google says no third-party tool can see its internal ranking or AI systems.

AI SEO myths Google itself warns against

AI SEO attracts plenty of hacks, and Google’s July 2026 guide lists several you can ignore for Google Search.

  • “You need an llms.txt file.” Google says Search ignores llms.txt and similar AI text files. They neither help nor harm your Google visibility, though other services may read them.
  • “Chop content into small chunks.” Google says its systems handle several topics on one page. It also says there is no ideal page length.
  • “Buy mentions to get cited.” Seeking inauthentic mentions is less helpful than it looks. Spam systems apply to AI features as well.
  • “Special schema gets you in.” No special schema.org markup is required. Structured data still helps with rich results.
  • “Make a page for every fan-out query.” Doing that mainly to manipulate AI answers breaks Google’s scaled content abuse policy.

These points cover Google only. Other engines publish less about ranking, so Digital Magma tests them with prompt checks instead of guessing.

AI SEO: frequently asked questions

AI SEO questions business owners ask us most, with short answers.

What is AI SEO in simple words?

AI SEO means making sure AI tools can find your website, understand it and mention it when people ask questions.

Think of it as SEO for answers instead of lists of links. The basics stay the same.

Is AI SEO different from traditional SEO?

The foundations match. Google says its AI features rest on core ranking systems and need no extra technical requirements. The target and scorecard change.

You want to be quoted or named inside an answer, and you track AI impressions, citations and prompt results next to rankings.

What is AI SEO and GEO?

AI SEO is the broad goal of visibility in AI search. GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is a narrower term from a 2023 research paper about getting content cited in generated answers.

GEO is one part of AI SEO. The GEO entry covers the research.

How does AI SEO work?

AI SEO works on the chain every AI answer follows: crawl, index, retrieve, write and cite.

Each stage has a fix: allow the right crawlers, get indexed, write clear answer passages and keep brand facts consistent.

Can an agency guarantee my brand appears in ChatGPT?

No honest agency can promise that. OpenAI has not published how ChatGPT chooses between eligible sources.

Soni Katiyar’s Google review of Digital Magma sets a fair bar: “They explain strategies clearly and focus on long-term business growth instead of short-term promises.”

Do I need an llms.txt file for AI SEO?

For Google, an llms.txt file is unnecessary. Google’s July 2026 guide says Search ignores it, so it neither helps nor harms.

Some other tools read it, so add it once the basics are done. See the llms.txt entry.

How long does AI SEO take?

Crawler changes land quickly. OpenAI says robots.txt updates reach its search systems in about 24 hours, and Perplexity says up to 24 hours.

Content and reputation work takes months, since it depends on recrawling and on other sites. A planned answer covers AI SEO timelines.

Which AI SEO tools are worth using?

Start with the free first-party tools: Google Search Console with its Generative AI performance report, and Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance.

Add Screaming Frog for technical checks. Paid trackers can help, but Google says no third-party tool sees its internal systems.

How much does AI SEO cost in India?

Cost depends on site size, competition and how much content and reputation work is needed.

Digital Magma lists its scope on the AI SEO services page. A planned answer on AI SEO cost in India will break down typical budgets.
