What Is Answer Engine Optimization, and How Do You Do It?

What changes on a page when the goal is to be the quoted answer, what to stop doing, and how to tell if it worked.

What is answer engine optimization? The short answer

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring a page so that Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and voice assistants can lift one passage from it as the direct answer to a question. It grew out of featured-snippet work and now covers AI answers that quote a source.

An answer engine is any system that replies with an answer instead of a list. Google’s featured snippets were the first big one most marketers met. AI Overviews and chat assistants are the newest.

Key takeaways

  • You cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. Google says its systems decide.
  • The core AEO move is a clear question heading with a self-contained answer right under it.
  • Since August 2023, FAQ rich results show only for well-known government and health sites.
  • Speakable markup is still a beta for English news content on Google Assistant.
  • Track AEO through query data, AI impressions, Bing citations and AI referral visits.

AEO: how answer engines pick a passage

AEO starts from how each engine chooses the text it shows, and the engines say different amounts about that.

Featured snippets

Google’s featured snippets page says these boxes reverse the normal result: the descriptive snippet comes first. They can also appear inside the People Also Ask group.

Asked how to mark a page as a featured snippet, Google answers that you can’t.

Its systems judge whether a page would make a good one. A click on the snippet scrolls the visitor straight to that section of the page.

AI answers

AI Overviews and AI Mode pick passages from several pages at once. Google’s July 2026 guide describes retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out, a set of related searches the model runs to gather more material.

ChatGPT search and Perplexity work in a similar way. They search, read and quote. Their crawlers, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, must be able to reach your page first.

What a liftable passage looks like

Across all of them, a quotable passage has a few traits. It names the subject instead of opening with “it”.

It answers in the first sentence, then adds one or two lines of detail. It still makes sense when copied out alone.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO: scope and overlap

AEO sits between SEO and GEO, and most of the work overlaps.

Google’s July 2026 guide, Optimizing your website for generative AI features, treats both labels as SEO. It says optimizing for generative AI search is “still SEO” from Google Search’s view.

Digital Magma agrees with the practical point. A page that cannot rank or be indexed will not be picked as the answer either.

AEO for a business: why it matters

AEO matters to a business because the answer box is where a buyer’s first impression now forms.

A small firm rarely outranks big publishers for broad terms. It can still own narrow, specific questions in its trade.

“How long does GST registration take” is easier to win than “accounting”. Digital Magma starts AEO work with questions like that for this reason.

The answer also travels. A passage that works as a featured snippet is the same kind of text an AI summary or a voice reply can reuse.

There is a downside to plan for. A complete answer can satisfy the searcher without a visit. Good AEO leaves a reason to click: a calculator, a checklist, local detail or an offer.

AEO: what to do (6 steps)

AEO comes down to six habits. Digital Magma applies them page by page, starting with the pages that already rank on page one.

  1. Collect real questions. Pull them from People Also Ask, Google autocomplete, Search Console queries and your sales calls. Real wording beats guessed wording.
  2. Use the question as the heading. Put it in an H2 or H3, phrased the way people ask it.
  3. Answer in 40 to 60 words, right below. Name the subject, give the answer in the first sentence and avoid “it depends” openers.
  4. Add depth after the answer. Follow with steps, a table, an example or your own data. The extra depth gives readers a reason to visit.
  5. Keep snippets allowed. Check that nosnippet, data-nosnippet or a low max-snippet value is not blocking the passage. Google’s AI features need snippet-eligible pages.
  6. Mark up honestly. Add structured data that matches the visible text. Treat FAQPage markup as a description aid, not a route to a rich result.

How to measure AEO: featured snippets, AI citations and referral visits

Measuring AEO means watching four places, because no report labels answer wins directly.

  • Search Console Performance report. Track impressions and clicks for your question queries. A sharp change in CTR on a stable position often means a snippet was won or lost.
  • Generative AI performance report. Google’s help page says it reached all sites on 31 August 2026. It counts impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • Bing AI Performance. Microsoft’s AI Performance report lists citations by URL and the grounding queries behind them.
  • Referral visits in analytics. In GA4, watch sessions referred by assistant domains such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai, and see which landing pages they reach.

Spot-check the rest by hand. Search your top 20 questions monthly and note who holds the snippet and who gets quoted.

AEO mistakes: FAQ schema hopes, voice-only thinking and thin Q&A pages

AEO mistakes usually come from advice that was true years ago. These four are the ones Digital Magma would fix first.

Expecting FAQ schema to win the answer

Google’s Search Central blog announced on 8 August 2023 that FAQ rich results would show only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. How-to rich results were dropped entirely that September.

Google added that unused structured data causes no problems, so there is no need to strip it. It just has no visible effect for most sites.

Thinking only about voice

Google’s speakable documentation, updated on 8 September 2026, still calls the feature a beta. It serves topical news queries on Google Assistant devices for English-language publishers.

For most businesses, voice is a side effect of good written answers. It is a poor reason to rewrite a site.

Publishing thin Q&A pages at scale

One page per question variant looks efficient. Google’s July 2026 guide warns that creating content for every variation mainly to manipulate AI responses breaks its scaled content abuse policy.

Burying the answer

A long warm-up before the answer is the easiest fault to fix. Move the answer up. Keep the story for afterwards, where readers who want it will find it.

AEO: frequently asked questions

AEO questions people search for most, answered briefly.

What is AEO in SEO?

In SEO, AEO stands for answer engine optimization.

It is the part of SEO focused on getting your passage shown as the direct answer, in a featured snippet, a voice reply or an AI summary. Google treats it as ordinary SEO.

What is AEO in digital marketing?

In digital marketing, AEO is the content habit of answering customer questions so clearly that search engines and AI assistants repeat your words.

It supports brand awareness, because your name appears inside the answer people read first.

What is AEO and GEO?

AEO aims for the single answer passage. GEO, generative engine optimization, aims to be one of several sources an AI tool cites in a written reply.

They overlap heavily. A planned explainer on AEO vs GEO compares them.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

AEO is a subset of SEO. Google’s July 2026 guide says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO.

The difference is focus: AEO works at the level of a single question and its answer passage.

What is a good length for an answer passage?

Aim for 40 to 60 words for the direct answer, then add detail below it.

Google publishes no minimum for featured snippets and says the length varies by language, platform and content. Shorter is fine if it fully answers.

Does FAQ schema still help AEO?

FAQ schema rarely produces a rich result now. Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites.

The markup can stay if it matches the visible text, but the visible answer does the real work.

Is AEO only for voice search?

Voice is only one surface. The same answer passage can appear as a featured snippet, inside AI Overviews or as a quoted source in ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Google’s speakable markup is still a beta limited to English news.

Which AEO tools are worth using?

Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are free and first-party.

Add autocomplete and People Also Ask for question research, and GA4 for AI referral visits. Rank trackers that flag snippet ownership help on larger sites.

Can a local business do AEO?

Local businesses are well placed for it. Answer the specific questions customers ask, such as prices, timings and service areas, on your own pages.

Keep Google Business Profile details current, since Google says it can feed AI answers.
