AEO vs GEO Explained: Same Goal, Different Origins and Metrics
AEO and GEO both mean getting your content used in AI answers. AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice answers, GEO out of a 2023 research paper, and Google calls both of them SEO.
AEO vs GEO: what is the difference? The short answer
AEO vs GEO is mostly a difference of origin. Answer engine optimization grew from featured snippets and voice assistants, and aims to be the direct answer. Generative engine optimization comes from a 2023 research paper, and aims to be cited inside AI-written answers. The day-to-day work overlaps heavily, and Google treats both as SEO.
Key takeaways
- AEO targets one answer box or spoken reply. GEO targets citations inside a generated answer.
- Google’s July 2026 guide says optimizing for generative AI search “is … still SEO”.
- Most AEO and GEO tasks are the same: answer-first pages, clear facts, crawler access, outside proof.
- The real differences show up in metrics and platforms, not in the writing.
- Do not pay for AEO and GEO as two separate packages for the same pages.

What does AEO mean, and where did the term come from?
AEO, or answer engine optimization, means shaping content so a search engine or assistant can lift it as the single direct answer to a question. The term grew with Google’s featured snippets and with voice assistants, where one answer is read aloud and the rest of the page is never seen.
Google describes featured snippets as boxes where the usual result format is reversed, so the descriptive snippet comes first. That reversal is the idea behind AEO: the answer leads, the link follows.
AEO practice settled on a few habits:
- A question as the heading, in the words people use
- A short, complete answer straight after it
- Lists and tables for steps and comparisons
- FAQ sections for the follow-up questions
Nothing in that list is new to SEO. What AEO added was a target: win the one answer slot, rather than a blue link below it.
No standards body owns the term, so definitions drift between agencies. Our answer engine optimization entry gives the definition Digital Magma works to.
What does GEO mean, and where did the term come from?
GEO, or generative engine optimization, means improving how often and how prominently your content is cited in answers written by AI systems. The term was coined in an academic paper first posted in November 2023, which also introduced a benchmark for measuring that visibility.
The paper is GEO: Generative Engine Optimization by Pranjal Aggarwal and five co-authors. It was submitted to arXiv on 16 November 2023, revised to version 3 on 28 June 2024, and accepted at KDD 2024.
The authors define “generative engines” as systems that gather sources and summarise them with large language models. They built GEO-bench, a set of queries across many domains, to test changes to source pages.
Their headline finding is that GEO methods can boost visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40% on that benchmark. They also found the best method varies by domain.
Read that 40% carefully. It is the authors’ lab result on their own test set, not a forecast for any live AI tool or website.

The industry has since adopted the label. Microsoft’s February 2026 post on AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools calls that report “an early step toward Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) tooling”.
More detail sits in our generative engine optimization entry.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO vs AIO vs LLMO in one table
AEO vs GEO is often asked alongside SEO, AIO and LLMO, because vendors use all five labels. The table compares them by origin, main target and main measure. Digital Magma treats SEO as the base layer and the other four as names for parts of the same job.
| Term | Full form | Where it came from | Main target | Typical measure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search engine optimization | Classic web search | Rankings and clicks | Positions, clicks, leads |
| AEO | Answer engine optimization | Featured snippets and voice assistants | Being the direct answer | Answer boxes won, spoken answers |
| GEO | Generative engine optimization | 2023 research paper (KDD 2024) | Citations in AI-written answers | Citation and mention rates |
| AIO | AI optimization (also used for AI Overviews) | Industry shorthand, loosely defined | Visibility in AI tools generally | Varies by vendor |
| LLMO | Large language model optimization | Industry shorthand | How models describe a brand | Accuracy and sentiment of answers |
Watch the AIO row. Some people use “AIO” for AI optimization, others for Google’s AI Overviews. Ask which one a proposal means.
LLMO leans toward the model’s own memory, meaning what an assistant says about you without searching. We cover it in a planned LLM optimization entry.
None of these four labels has an official definition from Google, OpenAI or Microsoft. Each agency fills them in its own way.
Why does the AEO vs GEO difference matter less than vendors suggest?
The AEO vs GEO difference matters less than vendors suggest because the search systems themselves do not reward the labels. Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and the tasks that help one also help the other. The distinction is useful for planning, not for buying twice.
Google’s guide, Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search, updated on 10 July 2026, addresses the terms by name.
It says AEO and GEO describe work aimed at AI search visibility. Then: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”
The same guide adds that if you are considering third-party “AEO” or “GEO” advice or services, you should check it against Google’s guidance on evaluating SEO advice.
Its myth-busting section lists things you can ignore for Google: special AI text files, “chunking” content into tiny pieces, rewriting just for AI, and chasing inauthentic mentions.
Digital Magma advises buyers to look for two signs of double billing. One is “AEO content” and “GEO content” listed as two monthly lines for the same set of FAQ pages. The other is a separate GEO audit that repeats the SEO audit almost item for item.
Neither has to be dishonest. The labels arrived fast, and a scope can grow a new line without anyone merging the old one.
So a buyer comparing AEO vs GEO proposals should ask one question first. Which tasks in this package would you not already do under good SEO?
If the honest answer is “very few”, you are looking at a new label on familiar work. That is fine, as long as you pay for it once.
Where do AEO and GEO really differ? Tasks, metrics and platforms
AEO and GEO really differ in three places: a few tasks, the metrics used to judge success, and the platforms that matter most. AEO leans on answer boxes and voice replies. GEO leans on citation tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and AI Overviews, with prompt panels as its main tool.
| Area | AEO emphasis | GEO emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Content unit | One question, one tight answer | Self-contained passages a model can quote |
| Evidence | Clear, short facts | Statistics, quotations and cited sources, as tested in the GEO paper |
| Off-site work | Limited | Mentions in reviews, press and forums |
| Main metric | Answer boxes and spoken answers won | Citation rate and share of voice per prompt |
| Main platforms | Google answer features, voice assistants | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, AI Overviews, AI Mode |
| First-party data | Search Console search appearance | Bing AI Performance and Search Console’s generative AI report |
The first-party data row is new. Microsoft’s AI Performance report counts citations across Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries.
Google’s generative AI performance report in Search Console shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says it reached all websites on 31 August 2026.
For Digital Magma clients, GEO reporting now starts from these two reports and adds a prompt panel for ChatGPT and Perplexity, which publish no owner report.
Those two reports make GEO more measurable than it was in 2024. They also show how close the two ideas are: both are reported inside ordinary search tools.
What Digital Magma has seen when AEO and GEO run as one programme
In Digital Magma’s client work, AEO and GEO results came from one programme of SEO, answer-first pages and outside proof, never from two separate packages. The clients now visible in AI answers got there through the same pages that won them rankings and clicks.
A Canadian welding manufacturer is the clearest example. Over a three-year engagement it has kept 40+ keywords in Google’s top 10.
The same brand is visible in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. In one three-month window its site earned about 30K clicks from about 100K impressions. That AI visibility sits on top of the search work, not beside it.
An app development company working in six countries shows the scale side. Its organic sessions grew from about 800 to 50,000+ a month, with 500+ keywords on page one and 100+ at #1.
That was classic international SEO, and it is the base that AEO and GEO advice builds on today. The labels are newer than the work.
This is why Digital Magma sells AEO and GEO as views of one plan. Each page explains its focus, and neither duplicates the other’s fee.
How can one page serve AEO and GEO together?
One page serves AEO and GEO together when it answers a single question in its opening lines, backs the answer with sourced facts, and stays readable as separate sections. Digital Magma builds every answer page to this pattern, so the same URL can win a featured snippet and an AI citation.
- Question heading. Use the buyer’s own wording, as a question.
- Answer in 40 to 60 words. Complete on its own, with the subject named.
- Sourced facts. Each number links to its publisher, with a date.
- First-hand detail. What your team saw, did and measured.
- Short sections. Each H2 answers one sub-question, so any section can be quoted alone.
- A table. For comparisons, prices or steps.
- Crawler access. Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot allowed.
- Text in HTML. The answer is in the page source, not loaded later by scripts.
Points 1, 2 and 6 are classic AEO. Points 3 and 4 match the GEO paper’s findings and Google’s call for “non-commodity” content. Points 7 and 8 are plain technical SEO.
Notice what is missing: no separate AI version of the page, no hidden text for chatbots, no special file. Google’s guide says none of those is needed for its AI features.
A quick test for any page you already have: read only the first paragraph under each heading. If each one answers its heading on its own, the page is ready for answer boxes and AI citations alike. Digital Magma uses that test as the first step of every AEO and GEO review.
This page follows the same pattern. You can check it against the list.
AEO vs GEO: frequently asked questions
These are the AEO vs GEO questions buyers send Digital Magma when they receive two proposals for what looks like the same work. The answers stick to what Google, Microsoft and the GEO paper actually say.
What is AEO and GEO in SEO?
Both are names for parts of SEO aimed at AI-era search. AEO targets direct answers such as featured snippets. GEO targets citations inside AI-generated answers. Google’s 2026 guide says both are still SEO from its point of view.
What are the full forms of AEO, GEO and AIO?
AEO is answer engine optimization. GEO is generative engine optimization. AIO usually means AI optimization, though some people use it for Google’s AI Overviews, so check which one is meant.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google says its generative AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, so pages need the same crawlability, indexing and quality as before.
Should a small business start with AEO or GEO?
Start with the shared base: crawler access, a Google Business Profile, and one answer-first page per common customer question. That work counts as AEO and GEO at once. Add citation tracking once the pages are live.
Can one page support AEO and GEO together?
It can, and it should. A question heading, a short complete answer, sourced facts and short sections serve answer boxes and AI citations with the same URL.
Do AEO and GEO need different tools?
Mostly the same tools: Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4 and a crawler. GEO adds a prompt panel to log citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity, which can be a spreadsheet or a paid tracker.
Does Google recommend AEO or GEO services?
Google does not endorse either label. Its guide says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and asks site owners to check any third-party AEO or GEO advice against its official guidance.
What is LLMO and how does it fit in?
LLMO, large language model optimization, focuses on how assistants describe a brand, including from their built-in memory. It overlaps with GEO and depends on consistent facts about the brand across the web.
